what to wear with jeans to fancy them up

Hello little chickadees!
I’m Kara and I have a terrible habit of calling people totally inappropriate names (my same-age, brother-in-law loves that I call him “kiddo” (sorry, Jesse!). I also like posting photos of myself that make me look way cooler than I am (see above).

I have spent the majority of my life around kids – nanny, teacher, older sister, high school volunteer are a couple hats I’ve worn – so when I had my own kiddos I, obviously, completely melted down, questioned every choice I made, and turned into a complete crazy person. Basically, I became a parent.

One fateful night, I was hanging out with a bunch of my friends chatting and we were all talking about getting dinner on the table. I had zero to add to the recipe/cooking piece of the talk, but when it came to how to entertain your kids so you can actually get it on the table, I wouldn’t shut up. By the end of our talk (ahem, my lecture) I was yelling with excitement, my friends were slightly impressed and a little scared, and I realized this was the part of parenting I could get right (because it wasn’t going to be meals or housekeeping).

So I started blogging about the fun activities we were doing on a regular basis and, slowly, Fabulistas morphed from a traditional mom blog into a place where moms can find ideas for everyday parties and easy fun, gift guides for all occasions, and trinkets that will leave a smile on your face.

To people who know my family, this transition doesn’t come as a surprise at all. My mom used to throw epic birthday parties for us kids on a dime and our sister dance competitions are legendary (in our minds). Our motto: We may not be the best dancers at the party, but, dammit, we’ll be having the most fun. We were brought up to believe you’re responsible for making your own party.

My goal is to give my kids that gift; to help them be happy, yes, but also to be open to life and experiences and joy. To teach them to choose laughter and to make their own good time. And, for it all to happen in a way where I have still have time to read the latest Tana French.

Other important things I think you should know about me, include:
-I have had almost every job imaginable, including postal worker, waitress, actress, Special Ed teacher, voice over artist, newspaper delivery gal, pedi-cabber, and au pair. I like my current one of blogger best.

-For some time, I was a wedding blogger at one of the best wedding websites on the internet. I made some of my best friends (1, 2, 3) during that time and still dream about a certain crepe cake.

-There’s nothing I like better than a good book or TV show or movie. Basically, anything that means I can sit on the couch and eat desserts (my sister’s a baker so it’s not my fault).

-Because I eat so much deliciousness, I have to get up early and run every day. This makes me simultaneously smug and very, very tired.

-If I could marry one thing, it’d be iced coffee. It’s never let me down, is magnificent in its creamy deliciousness, and keeps me sane and (sadly) very happy. Also, even though I’m 40 I still marry things in my mind.

-When I was younger, I backpacked around Europe in heels and short skirts. It was occasionally painful, but, omg, I looked good. This has led to my current, parenting philosophy on clothing: Wear whatever makes you happy, just don’t let it stop you from doing anything fun.

-I am incredibly excitable. This is great if you have good news to share, but can be a bit overwhelming if you’re meeting me for the first time and ask me about my hairdresser because he is THE BEST and you should absolutely go to him and I am not going to shut up until you have an appointment on the books. This also applies to books, movies, apps, and, basically, anything I have an opinion about. You’ve been warned.

-I currently live with my family in the fairytale city of San Francisco and try really hard to get out of my hood to enjoy the land of toast, hipster beards, and hilarious events. I miss my hometown of Denver often (and all my peeps there) and talk incessantly about how magical summer evenings are in Colorado.

-There was a time I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a wife and mom. I was an idiot.

-I’m genuinely so happy to meet you and genuinely touched you’re spending your valuable free time on my site. If we were in person, I’d be asking where you got your shoes and checking to see when you’re available for a coffee date. Promise, if we see each other in real life, you’ll come up and say hi!
